Nyidalur Hut

Nýi dalur skáliThe Iceland Touring Association's huts are located at about 800 metres above mean sea level at the mouth of valley Nyidalur (Jokuldalur).  The Sprengisandur Route lies right pat them.  The older hut was built in 1967.  It has two storeys.  The ground floor comprises an entrance, a kitchen, the warden's room, and a sleeping hall, and upstairs are sleeping quarters.  The younger hut has a kitchen, a warden's room, and a sleeping hall downstairs, and upstairs are sleeping quarters.  Both houses accommodate 120 people in bunks and on mattresses on the floor.  Both kitchens are equipped with oil-stoves, pots and pans, but no other utensils.  During the period July 1st to August 31st the huts are attended by wardens.  WC and showers are in a separate house.  On a fine day, the view from the huts is magnificent.  The nearby Tungnafell glacier is easy to conquer from the well vegetated valley Nyidalur (Jokuldalur), which also allows access to Pass Vonarskard across the mountain ridge Mjohals.
