In a quiet fjord in the Strandir region lies Valgeirsstaðir. Majestic mountains rise all around, offering sweeping views and enjoyable hikes. A family‑friendly destination set in vast, unspoiled nature that welcomes you warmly.

The Icelandic Touring Association (FÍ) operates hut accommodation in Valgeirsstaðir in Norðurfjörður.

Hiking in the area:

  • Urðartindur (Tafla): The hike is around 4 km long and takes 2-3 hours. The hiket o Tafla is short but rather steep. The trail is marked from the road up along the mountain.
  • Around Krossnesfjall: The hike is around 17km and takes approximately 6 hours to complete. The route follows the road up to Munaðarnes, then veers down to the coast. The path along the coast sits below a cliff and is rocky in parts, the hike will be slow. Near Fell a staircase will bring you back to the road in the fields to get back to Valgeirsstaðir. Krossneslaug pool is on this route so don‘t forget your swimsuit.
  • Glissa: The hike is about 12 km and takes 5 hours. There is considerable elevation on this route, being the tallest mountain in the area. The hike begins at Eyrarháls, where you follow an old road. We go up between the rock through Unnarskarð, being cautious as there are many loose rocks on the slopes. If there is time, it is ideal to continue to the southern peak of the mountain, where you are greeted with a beautiful view of Árnesdalur. If you are in the right mood, it is ideal to hike Eyrarfjall on the way back.
  • Húsárfoss and Rjúkandi: The hike is around 5 km long and takes 2 hours. It is best to walk up the south side of the river and wade it above Húsárfoss, which is also worth seeing. The next ridge can also be reached after crossing Húsá, if you have a car suited for river crossings. This is not a demanding hike, everyone should be able to do it. This waterfall is one of the most beautiful in the area.
  • Drynjandi: The hike is around 6 km and takes 2-3 hours. The Hvalá river crossing is on a bridge, whether you ford the Húsá river and walk there, or drive all the way if your vehicle is suitable. From the bridge you walk up along the river, and it’s best to stay a little away from the edge of the gorge until you reach the waterfall.

Getting here

It is most common to get to Valgeirsstaðir by car as the road is accessible to all vehicles. The journey takes around 5 hours from Reykjavík.

 Safety Tips for Hikers

  • Plan ahead: Check theweather forecastand trail conditions before you start your hike. The weather in Iceland can be unpredictable, so be prepared for rain, wind, and even snow at higher altitudes.
  • Weather conditions:Be prepared for extreme weather at higher altitudes, weather can change quickly.
  • Bring proper gear: Wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots and bring a waterproof jacket and trousers.

Krossneslaug pool

It’s wonderful to relax in Krossneslaug after hiking in the area. Located just under 4 km from Valgeirsstaðir, on the eastern coast of Strandir, the pool offers a unique view over the mountains and the sea.

Connection to Hornstrandir

It is possible to sail to Hornstrandir from Norðurfjörður. From there, boats travel to Hornvík, Hlöðuvík, and Látravík, where the Hornbjarg lighthouse stands. It is also possible to sail to Furufjörður, Reykjafjörður, and Drangar. Staying at Valgeirsstaðir before your boat trip is therefore an ideal choice.

Accommodation in Norðurfjörður

Valgeirsstaðir is an old farmhouse located at the innermost part of Norðurfjörður. Cozy accommodation is offered there, with five bedrooms that can host up to 26 guests. The house is equipped with all necessary amenities, including a well‑furnished kitchen, a dining room, and comfortable sleeping areas. In a typical year, the lodge is open from early June until the end of August.

A campsite surrounds the lodge at Valgeirsstaðir, where guests can stay in tents or camper vans.
