Hvítárnes
Please book your bed in the hut through the blue button located up to the right on this page.
The Hvítárnes hut is the oldest mountain hut owned and operated by the Ferðafélag Íslands (The Iceland Touring Association, FÍ) built in 1930. The hut has a turf roof and is protected by Icelandic law because of its age and uniqueness.
The hut is located by the ancient Kjalvegur hiking trail.
FACILITIES
The hut has two floors where a total of 30 people can sleep. The ground floor has an entrance, two rooms with bunk beds and a tiny kitchen. The loft has a small room and larger dormitory with mattresses on the floor. The kitchen has running cold water, a gas-stove and a log-stove for heating.
Guests have to take their trash with them and leave nothing behind.
A toilet is located near the hut. The camping ground is also by the toilet.
OPENING SEASON AND ACCESS
During summer it is possible to drive 4x4 jeeps to Hvítárnes hut, turning off Kjalvegur road (35) right after the Hvítá bridge.
The opening season of the huts depends on when the Icelandic Road Authority opens the road and that in turn depends on snow conditions and general conditions of the road itself.
The hut can be rented in winter by sending a hut enquiry to the offices of FÍ. Please keep in mind that winter travel in Iceland is serious business and should only be undertaken by highly skilled hikers, accustomed to extreme conditions and carrying 5 season equipment.
NEARBY SIGHTS
This hut is the starting or ending point for the ancient Kjalvegur hiking trail. The view from the hut is breathtaking.
