Hut: Þverbrekknamúli

Þverbrekknamúli

Please book your bed in the hut through the blue button located up to the right on this page.

The hut Þverbrekknamúli, owned and run by Ferðafélag Íslands (The Iceland Touring Association, FÍ) is situated southeast of Mt. Hrútfell, and accommodates 20 people in 10 double bunk beds.

The hut is located by the ancient Kjalvegur hiking trail.

FACILITIES

The house has an entrance and an open space that houses both the sleeping quarters, tables and chairs and a kitchenette with utensils and running cold water that has to be pumped from a tank outside the house.

A toilet is near the hut and a winter latrine/outhouse a bit further away.

Guests have to take their trash with them and leave nothing behind.

The hut in Þverbrekknamúli was built in 1980.

OPENING SEASON AND ACCESS

During sumer it is possible to drive nearly all the way to the hut with a robust 4x4 jeep. The last stretch must be completed on foot.

The opening season of the huts depends on when the Icelandic Road Authority opens the road and that in turn depends on snow conditions and general conditions of the road itself.

The hut is closed and locked during the winter time, but can be rented by sending a hut enquiry to the offices of FÍ. Please keep in mind that winter travel in Iceland is serious business and should only be undertaken by highly skilled hikers, accustomed to extreme conditions and carrying 5 season equipment.

NEARBY SIGHTS

In addition to the Kjalvegur hiking trail, climbing to the summit of Hrútfell is possible from the hut. The climb is very challenging.
