FACILITIES

Ferðafélag Íslands (The Iceland Touring Association, FÍ) operates a small mountain hut called Baldvinsskáli on Fimmvörðuháls.

From the entrance, you walk into a small dining room/kitchen. The kitchen has running water, gas stoves and utensils. On the second floor is a dormitory where a total of 16 people can sleep. A simple latrine/outhouse is located close to the hut. Guests have to take their trash along with them and leave nothing behind at the lodge.

Ferðafélag Íslands has worked for many years to bring water to Baldvinsskáli, and after numerous research and field trips, measurements, and engineering considerations, running water has now been installed in Baldvinsskáli.

The hike across Fimmvörðuháls, from Skógar to Þórsmörk is one of the most popular hiking trails in Iceland. The weather on the trail is infamously unreliable and precarious and thus the need for some shelter on the trail. The first hut on Fimmvörðuháls was built in the year 1974.

OPENING SEASON AND ACCESS

The hut is open and staffed during the summer.

The opening season of the hut depends on snow conditions and general conditions of the trail itself. On average one can assume that the hut is open from June 20th until September 15th.

Please keep in mind that winter travel in Iceland is serious business and should only be undertaken by highly skilled hikers, accustomed to extreme conditions and carrying 5 season equipment.
