Hagavatn
Please book your bed in the hut through the blue button located up to the right on this page.
FACILITIES
Ferðafélag Íslands (The Iceland Touring Association, FÍ) operates a small mountain hut under Einifell close to Hagavatn lake.
The hut is a tiny one-room-hut with bunk beds on each side and a small table between them. A small open loft is located above half of the hut. Six to eight people can sleep in the bunk beds and four in the loft, though it can feel a bit snug at full capacity.
There is no real kitchen in the hut and it is heated with a wooden furnace. There is no running water in the area and only glacial water can be found in the hut's vicinity. A latrine/outhouse is located close by. There is a good camping ground under Einifell and also beside the hut.
Guests have to take their trash with them and leave nothing behind.
The hut was built in 1942 and is situated in a vegetated dell at the edge of glacier Langjökull and at the foot of the westernmost of the Mt. Jarlhettur.
OPENING SEASON AND ACCESS
During summer it is possible to drive robust 4x4 vehicles to Hagavatn hut, turning off Kjalvegur road (35) by Sandá and following Hagavatnsvegur (F335) from there. The road can be rocky and unbridged streams need to be crossed.
The opening season of the huts depends on snow conditions and general conditions of the road itself.
The huts can be rented in winter by sending a hut enquiry to the offices of FÍ. Please keep in mind that winter travel in Iceland is serious business and should only be undertaken by highly skilled hikers, accustomed to extreme conditions and carrying 5 season equipment.
