Hrafntinnusker

The Höskuldsskáli hut in Hrafntinnusker is operated by Ferðafélag Íslands (The Iceland Touring Association, FÍ) and accommodates 52 people. The hut sits right on the popular trail Laugavegur, from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk and is often considered the first stop on the trail.

Please book your bed in the hut through the blue button located up to the right on this page.

FACILITIES

The Hrafntinnusker hut has two floors. On the ground floor are an entrance hall, a kitchen (with utensils, gas stoves and cold, running water) and a dormitory. On the loft is sleeping bag accommodation with mattresses. The dormitory has single bunks and double bunks (with mattresses). A charcoal grill can be found outside.

Special hut for the wardens is located just west of the main house. A toilet with latrines and sinks is behind the hut and a big patio surrounds the hut and connects the hut with the latrines. There are no showers in the area. Another latrine/outhouse is located at the camping ground below the hut. The camping is on sand, gravel or snow, depending on conditions.

Since the hut is almost inaccessible by car, all guests are asked to take their trash along with them and leave nothing behind at the lodge.

Please note, everyone that is not staying the night either at the huts or at the campsite is required to pay a facility fee for the usage of the bathrooms and outdoor facilities such as grill and benches.
The facility fee is used to maintain and improve facilities in the highlands of Iceland.

The first hut in Hrafntinnusker was built in the year 1977 to service hikers on the Laugavegur trail.

OPENING SEASON AND ACCESS

The hut is open and manned during summer. The hut is only accessible by foot and the almost impassable dirt road leading to the hut is only used occasionally to transport provisions to the hut.

The opening season of the hut depends on when the Icelandic Road Authority opens the roads in the Nature Reserve Fjallabak and thus the Laugavegur trail. That in turn depends on snow conditions and general conditions of the roads itself.

On average one can assume that the hut in Hrafntinnusker is open from June 25 until September 16.

The hut is closed and locked during the winter time. On rare occasions the hut can be rented during winter but only on the condition that a hut warden accompanies the group. You can send a hut enquiry to the offices of FÍ.

Please keep in mind that winter travel in Iceland is a serious business and should only be undertaken by highly skilled hikers, accustomed to extreme conditions and carrying 5 season equipment.
