Nýidalur
Please book your bed in the hut through the blue button located up to the right on this page.
Ferðafélag Íslands (The Iceland Touring Association, FÍ) operates two huts at the mouth of valley Nýidalur, that house a total of 54 people.
FACILITIES
The huts are similarly built. On the ground floor is an entrance, a well-equipped kitchen, a big dorm room with bunk beds and a warden's room. On the second floor are sleeping lofts with mattresses.
Toilets and showers are located in a separate house close by and there is a winter latrine/outhouse behind the toilet house.
The camping ground is situated close to the toilet building.
The first hut in Nýidalur was built in the year 1967 on the road that goes over the central highlands at Sprengisandur.
OPENING SEASON AND ACCESS
During summer it is possible to drive 4x4 jeeps to Nýidalur along Sprengisandsleið (F26).
The opening season of the huts depends on when the Icelandic Road Authority opens the road and that in turn depends on snow conditions and general conditions of the road itself. On average one can assume that the huts are open from early July to early September.
The huts are closed and locked during the winter time, but can be rented by sending a hut enquiry to the offices of FÍ. Please keep in mind that winter travel in Iceland is serious business and should only be undertaken by highly skilled hikers, accustomed to extreme conditions and carrying 5 season equipment.
NEARBY SIGHTS
On a fine day, the view from the huts is magnificent. The nearby Tungnafell glacier can be climbed from the well-vegetated valley Nýidalur which also allows access to Pass Vonarskarð across the mountain ridge Mjóháls.
